Academy Players - Lip Service?

Post by Mick Earls Fan Club » Sun Sep 08, 2019 9:05 am

After declaring he would give youth a chance in his manifesto , is Danny actually just paying "lip service"?

Yes he's naming players on the bench each week, but we're yet to see one on the pitch in a competitive game.

I thought Simba Kudyiwa looked good in preseason matches, but now we have injuries at CB rather than give him a chance Danny has gone and bought a player in on loan.

Why have Reece Wiley on the bench this week and last week it was Liam Montague? Are we just peddling false hope by giving out squad numbers?.

I want to see Academy players on the pitch getting game time not taking in turns to have a day out as an unused sub!

Perhaps they’re not good enough or better than what we’ve already tried..... yet :?:

If they are not good enough. Why are they on the bench?

It’s all about numbers and bodies Terry

So if its just about making the numbers up, then we are peddling false hope

I don't think its peddling false hope, I am sure that Academy players named on the bench are there because they have shown some potential that is worth testing at a higher level to give them an opportunity to showcase their talent.

However to test someone at the higher level you do need to ensure that you do it at a time when its appropriate to do so ideally when we are winning a game with a comfortable lead, to play an inexperienced academy player when we are losing and really up against it would not benefit the team and would certainly not benefit the player.

Well if we only introduce them when we are winning a game, they will never play.

Just chuck a couple of them in.
Can't do any worse than what we have out there already.
Did the Derby loanee actually do anything special?
Having seen the highlights on BT , it was his fault for their second goal.

Trouble is, at the moment are any of them really going to do any better than those who’ve been playing? Of course you don’t know unless you give them a chance but very unlikely I’d say...

Mixed 45 mins for Max Hunt. Certainly didn’t look good enough to be playing Championship level football so can see why Derby have loaned him out.

Last season some people criticised GW for not putting academy players on the bench. People were saying he should just put them on there to get the feel for first team football even if they didn't play. Some people asked why we had just 3 or 4 on the bench and why he didn't fill it with academy players. Now some people are asking why DS is not playing them. Damned if you do...etc

I'm probably one of the people who asked that of GW.

Yes this is a slight improvement on GW's attitude towards the Academy, but is still not enough.

Are we waiting to be playing in the NL South before giving Youth a chance? Or will there be excuses again when we are there this time next year?
